How to make the Writer's Workbench Toolbar available whenever Word is invoked

This entry was inspired by a request from Dr. Kit Nip of Iowa Wesleyan College (Thanks Kit!)

This procedure is not recommended for systems which use other Microsoft Word add-ins through document templates.

You can have the WWB toolbar available to Word whenever Word is invoked using one of two methods.  This tips entry is written for Writer's Workbench Version 8.18 and later releases.

First method

  1. Create a folder C:\WWB\Startup

  2. Move (not copy) C:\WWB\Templates\wwb.dot to C:\WWB\Startup
  3. Invoke Microsoft Word (Start, Programs, Microsoft Word or through a desktop shortcut)
  4. Pull down Tools, Options, File Locations; select Startup and Modify to C:\WWB\Startup
  5. Exit out of Word
  6. Delete the shortcut to Writer's Workbench (not necessary, but you will get an error if you double-click this shortcut now)
  7. Invoke Microsoft Word again (Start, Programs, Microsoft Word or through a desktop shortcut)
  8. You should see the WWB toolbar and be able to use Writer's Workbench as if you had invoked Word using the WWB icon.
  9. You will no longer need to access Writer's Workbench using the WWB icon.

Second method

  1. Get into Microsoft Word without loading the WWB tools
  2. Pull down Tools, Options, File Locations; select Startup and click Modify to determine the folder location that Word is using for its startup location.
  3. Write that folder location down on a piece of paper.
  4. Move (not copy) C:\WWB\Templates\wwb.dot to that location.
  5. Exit out of Word
  6. Delete the shortcut to Writer's Workbench (not necessary, but you will get an error if you double-click this shortcut now)
  7. Invoke Microsoft Word (Start, Programs, Microsoft Word or through a desktop shortcut)
  8. You should see the WWB toolbar and be able to use Writer's Workbench as if you had invoked Word using the WWB icon.
  9. You will no longer need to access Writer's Workbench using the WWB icon.
